House Hunters: Real Life Edition

April 19, 2012 Leave a comment

The past few days have been the most stressful since before my wedding. In both cases the enormity of the commitment gave me pause…too many people jump into both thinking about “the day” rather than every day after.

Searching for house sucked in our price range was difficult to say the least.  While the market in Ithaca has deflated in the past few years, it is still high, especially to two people raised in Buffalo: the land of reasonable house prices.  Finally after visiting a dozen houses throughout the greater Ithaca area we found a house we both got the feeling for.  More importantly it was a home we could both see raising our kids in.  Every room we stepped into became a possible milestone that Anna or James could have in this room, or on the lawn.

Offers and couter-offers have filled the digital airwaves of Ithaca as my wife and I finally found a home that we did not rip apart like feral rodents within the first two minutes of stepping across the threshold.  The house is perfect for us.  Not perfect mind you..

  • It is above what we wanted to spend.
  • The roof is 21 years old.
  • PMI sucks.

I am sure there is more to come on that list. But never in the process did I feel hurried along or that Maureen Stapleton would end up cackling at our stupidity right after we signed for the house.

We are waiting on a response on the final counter offer my sleep schedule and half marathon training has taken a bath. Only 3 miles have been logged so far this week, and I used up my final skip (rest) day yesterday.  So after work tonight..at 2:30 am I am hitting the slopes of Cornell Campus for a night run.  There are plenty of lights and police patrols on campus as well as blue light phones.  It is a big drinking night, so there is that worry, but all I need is three miles.

“I Like the Night Life, Baby, let’s go!”
